Monica: A Chair
Spring 2020 I Furniture Design I Studio Project
What is a Chair?
Chairs are something we interact with everyday.
They serve as a setting to think, work, relax, converse, rest, and entertain
They can be comfortable, uncomfortable, valuable, heirlooms, and famous
For most, a chair is not just a piece of furniture, it is an experience.
Designer Inspiration
Nelson believed the a designer should use his work to better the world
In his view, nature was already perfect, but man ruined it by making things that didn’t follow the rules of nature.
It has been argued that Nelson might be called a metadesigner - that his intent of study and practice was neither the building nor the product but rather the process of design itself.
Nelson’s manner of interdisciplinary design, and therefore progressive thinking, reoriented the entire concern with capitalist destruction around the dynamic of producer and product.

Design Goals
Concept Development
Starting with 200 Initial Sketches
From those 200 thumbnails, I selected 30 to develop further
Then 30 more sketches…
I then pared the 30 down to the top three
Finally Landing on 3 Fleshed out concepts
Developed final concept
1/8 scale Model of Concept
Manufacturing
Functional Model
Form Iterations
Final Orthographics with Anthropmetry
To ensure that the chair’s proportions were universal for different population sizes
